(January 11, 2018 newsletter) – Welcome to the first Argo Not So Weekly Newsletter of 2018!

The Argo is working a vein of striped bass that more resembles a Comstock gold mine than fishing in San Pablo Bay. The action at times is non-stop; otherwise it’s a steady pick. There are very few days that don’t turn into catch and release once the daily quota has been archived. These are healthy fish providing great sport for anyone looking for a pro-active fishing experience.

For those on the hunt for big fish-bonus fish, sturgeon are now on the menu. Even before the recent downpour Argo anglers were seeing, feeling or touching at least one sturgeon per trip. The recent precipitation will only sweeten the water providing greater opportunity at something that pulls hard.

As always moving water/current is the key to success in this fishery. To accommodate nature the Argo start times are adjusted to match optimum bite patterns, which is another way of saying you may not have to get up at 5a.m. to go fishing. As an example, this coming Monday is a very civilized 9:30 a.m. arrival to be on the fishing grounds for prime time.

This same pattern will continue through February and likely into early March. Depending on the weather, and a certain amount of luck, halibut will be on the radar leading into spring. Judging by the smaller fish present the past few years halibut prospects are very bright.
