Fall Session

A very busy summer season kept the Argo splitting time between bay and ocean waters. Outside the Gate, salmon have remained in mostly a cooperative mood with a few expected bumps in the road. The action is not red hot as it was in July, but a bit more intense, as each bite may mean a personal best.

Realistically, expect fewer bites and potentially more bang with each takedown. Just yesterday our largest salmon of the year, a 28 pounder, was hauled over the rail. Looking near term salmon, there is room for one angler tomorrow (8/31) and space for one Sunday.

Overall pleasant ocean conditions have kept the rockfish in the bite mode, with limits of rockfish and good numbers of lingcod on dedicated trips. Even a few switch-overs on slow salmon days have come close to limits on nearby reefs.

Halibut have taken the headlines from striped bass over the past few weeks in the bay. The Argo has encountered some excellent recent halibut excursions averaging in the neighborhood of two fish per rod on full-day trips. Half-days are producing about a fish per rod when the tides and conditions are optimal. Halibut should remain steady with more stripers adding to the mix in the coming month.

Looking ahead, salmon season runs through October. Rockfish go till the end of the year, with rockfish/crab combos beginning November 3.

Weekends are still in demand with the first opening September 16, and last weekend in September available.
