The transition from winter to spring was more of an overnight sensation than the usual gradual swing. Just a few weeks ago the narrative was fishing on the anchor for sturgeon and striped bass, but within days after that after the last newsletter, the Argo was on the troll.
The result was surprisingly positive with halibut and bass jumping on the hooks effectively rendering the anchor for emergency use only. We’re now exclusively targeting halibut and firmly entrenched in spring mode.
The latest trip found near limits of halibut to 16 pounds with seven of the eleven fish above 10 digits. Over the past couple of weeks, scores are averaging a fish per rod or greater. New fish have moved into the bay this week giving hope the upward trend will continue.
The ever-present interest in salmon will have to remain in a holding pattern until the season is set in April. Pure speculation is a June start similar to last year. Even Carnac the Magnificent would find predicting the success of the upcoming season problematic, but at least we know June/July generally bring upbeat results.
The Argo is spending next week at the boatyard for some spring cleaning and sprucing. The following weekend is nearly full with weekdays March and April starting to fill the book.
A heads up to all our loyal Argonauts, there will be a price increase beginning May 1. Making reservations prior to that date will lock in the current rate. Obviously, fuel costs have skyrocketed along with all our expenses, but it’s also only fair to give deckhand Jay a raise. He’s been working hard to find his groove and deserves to be one of the highest-paid six-pack deckhands.
