Winter Migration

(Nov. 30, 2017 newsletter) — The modus operandi has transitioned to a more sedentary delivery, but success is still predicated on attention to detail. With striped bass willing to bite, and sturgeon now on the prowl, the action is keeping anglers on the their toes in San Pablo Bay.

Even on the sluggish tides, when the bite is expected to be somewhat slower, the bass just keep on coming resulting in a game of catch and release after scoring limits most days.

Friday looks like the day to get out with ideal currents and outstanding weather predicted. The weekend looks good with larger tides to keep the fish active.

The water outside the Gate has been quite cooperative this fall compared to the Victory-At-Sea conditions we encountered in latter 2016. Coastal rockfish tend to be playing hide and seek, but once found the bite has been overall very good most days. The one thing that will shut them down is a large swell.

Crab trap pulling has gone from thrilling catches early in the month, to slim picking. The Argo’s crab window is very likely closed leaving maybe another rockfish trip or two before season’s end December 31. This presents the more placidwaters of the upper bay as our playground until spring halibut make an appearance.

If you’ve read this far into the newsletter, you may find interest in purchasing an Argo Sportfishing holiday gift certificate for the lucky angler in your life. One phone call and it arrives printer-ready to your in-box the same day. The Argo is generally chartered during summer weekends leaving redemption easier on weekdays and non-peak seasons.
