Fall Fashion

In the past few weeks the Argo has been all over the chart. Running along the Marin coast for salmon and rockfish; up the bay for striped bass and halibut, and down bay to battle leopard sharks and other toothy bottom dwellers…Next week we’re heading west to the Farallon Islands.

Most interest has been placed on the salmon front where the action has remained a steady fish per rod most days. The place of origin is generally off Stinson Beach with a decent mix of hefty kings finding their way into the box. An added bonus is the more consistent fall weather that tends to present the ocean in a pleasant fashion. Salmon season ends October 31.

Rockfish are being cooperative, but we’re traveling a little farther than preferred for most half days. Full days are working fine with limits of rockfish the rule, and a few lingcod generally in the mix. Rockfish season runs until December 31, and will overlap the start of crab season in early November.

We made a couple trips into San Pablo Bay and found not only comfortable weather, but lots of mostly small striped bass running with an occasional keeper halibut. This is lively action that should continue through October.

Weekends are nearly filled through the end of salmon season, but there are a few individual spots still open in September and October. Of course, full-boat charters and open loads for groups up to six passengers are available on the weekdays.
