Total Cooperation

The Argo has been very busy chasing a variety of species ranging from sharks in the bay, to salmon well beyond the Golden Gate. Fortunately, almost everything is biting in one form or another and generally eating well enough to keep everyone satisfied.

Salmon have remained in a cooperative mood off the Marin coastline for most of the season, and now as an added bonus, ocean weather has mellowed to the point of niceness. A salmon per rod is still a good bet with the stakes being raised on many days. The season ends October 31.

The next best prospect is rockfish and lingcod that are chomping well placed baits along the entire northern coastline. Limits are the rule on full days, with half-day numbers more dependent on when the fish decide to eat.

We’re getting closer to what traditionally is a very fun fall striped bass migration through the bay and into San Pablo Bay. There are currently respectable numbers of bass being landed when the moon, sun and stars align. Actually, it’s not that difficult. It’s a matter of being in the right place at the optimum time. Looking for some real fun consider a light-tackle trolling day on San Pablo Bay in October.

There are still a few keeper halibut present in the bay, but they really haven’t been worth the effort hoping for a keeper or two. Next year may be banner considering all the small halibut in the bay this summer. There are some hefty halibut being boxed in the ocean, but conditions and tides must be just right to pull that one off.

Catch and release sharking remains consistently off the hook. A mix of leopards, and more recently, chunky seven gills are the primary visitors with an occasional something really big grabbing a line.

Weekends are booked into October, with the exception of a very few individual spots still open in September. Of course, full-boat charters and open loads for smaller groups are available on the weekdays.
