Take Your Pick

Salmon limits!

We finally reached that eclectic time of year when nearing anything is possible. Pick your poison and take your chances…Salmon are hanging off the Marin coast in seemingly better that expected numbers. In typical salmon fashion the success rate varies from day to day, but overall the Argo has averaged a fish per rod or better for the past couple weeks. Even the median size varies daily, but again that’s salmon fishing.

The Argo ventured up the coast for our first serious rockfish venture Sunday. Despite some southerly slop and a crew calling for “Ralph”, they hung in there for excellent action on schoolie bottom dwellers. We’ll be ramping up the rockfish/lingcod ventures as the ocean settles down.

Inside the bay, striped bass action has ranged from spotty to very good. Bass are all about being at the right place on the optimum tide. Sometimes it takes some bouncing around from spot to spot; sometimes they fall into your lap. Unlike last year when they were scattered throughout the east bay flats, it’s about angler proficiency and pounding rocky reefs.

There are literally tons of halibut in the bay right now; the problem is it would likely take a couple thousand fish to produce a ton. The bay is teaming with halibut ranging from 10 to 21 inches – the minimum size limit is 22 inches. This is obviously very good for future years, but weeding through the little guys has made landing keepers more challenging.

Sharking has been solid with plenty of large animals that pull hard. The Argo practices catch and release with all our sharks.

Open summer weekends are just about filled up. There are three days in August that remain open. Of course, full-boat charters and open loads for smaller groups are available on the weekdays.

For the latest update or if you have any questions, email or call (415) 361-7757. As with all our trips tackle, bait and fish cleaning are included within the price.
